The purpose of fuel filter is to strain out any particles present in the fuel by keeping them from entering the fuel system and potentially damaging the components or the engine. Common fuel filter faults are ;
1. Hard starting
Partially blocked or clogged fuel filter results in a hard to start engine. Adequate fuel flow to an engine is a requirement for engine starting. Any reduced or restricted fuel flow will hinder normal engine starting.
2. No starting
For a totally blocked or clogged filter, to the point of blocking fuel flow, the engine will not start. Fuel-air mixture is the requirements to get the engine started.
3. Engine hesitation
This is caused by an abnormal fuel flow to an engine leading to a condition that results in abnormal engine combustion and reduced engine power. A clogged fuel filter can cause an engine to hesitate or stumble during acceleration.
4. Engine stalling
Constant flow of fuel needs to reach the engine to run efficiently. Any disruption to the fuel flow, usually caused by clogged fuel filter, can cause an engine to frequently stall. Engine stalling is a condition of an engine whereby it abruptly cease its operation and stops turning due to not getting enough air, energy, fuel, or electric spark, fuel starvation,and a mechanical failure.
5. Erratic engine performance
Erratic (engine) performance is caused by an abnormal or alternating pattern of fuel flow into an engine. Under heavy acceleration or at high engine speeds, fuel pressure may be sufficient to allow adequate fuel flow past a partially clogged filter, which results inadequate engine performance. When engine speed is reduced,fuel flow may be restricted to the point of causing reduced engine power and performance.
6. Lack of power
Lack of power in all gears can be due to a lack of fuel getting to the injectors. This can be caused by dirty fuel filter. The ECU will automatically restrict the engine output to protect the engine. Other conditions for a lack of power include faulty injector and a mass air flow sensor.
7. Engine misfiring
The clogged fuel filter restricting the amount of extra fuel getting to one of the injectors may cause random cylinder misfiring. Clogged fuel filter will not cause random cylinder misfire while the engine is idling, except the fuel filter is completely blocked.
