The diesel engine is an internal combustion engine which can be either a two or four-stroke cycle. Burning or combustion of fuel in the cylinders is the source of power for the engine. Main difference to the gasoline engine is the compression ignition system, diesel fuel is mixed with the compressed air in-cylinder, rather than relying on a spark for ignition. The compression ratio is thrice that of the gasoline engine. Compression ratios in the diesel engine range between 6:1 for a stationery engine and 24:1 for passenger vehicles. The common components to the gasoline engines includes crankshaft, camshaft, piston, valves, water and oil pumps.

Diesel fuel systems provides a storage, sufficiently circulates clean filtered fuel for lubrication, cooling, and combustion and return of warm fuel from the engine back to the tank.

The diesel fuel system is the major component for proper engine operation. An engine out of adjustment will cause excessive exhaust smoke, poor fuel economy, heavy carbon build up(within the combustion chambers) and short engine life.
