The function and effect of the catalytic converter in a car or vehicle are essential and cannot be overlooked because it helps reduce harmful gasses the vehicle produces. But because it has precious metal in them, which could be used for so many things like bullets, catalytic converters are stolen from cars or vehicles these days.

Even when you take your car or vehicle to any mechanic workshop, check your car or vehicle to ensure that its catalytic converter has not been stolen. The fastest and easiest way to know is upon sighting the check engine light, which wasn't there before you took your car or vehicle to the workshop on the cluster at your vehicle's dashboard.

Aside from that, you can scan your vehicle with an OBD II auto scanner or fault detector to know, but that doesn't give a guaranteed confirmation. You can as well ask any panel beater to remove the exhaust housing and the catalytic converter to check.

Also, note that some criminal elements use what they call spacers to deceive your vehicle's ECU from detecting that the catalytic converter is no longer present in it. That means that the auto scanner won't see the absence of a catalytic converter except exhaust is removed and its presence is manually checked.

See what the said spacer looks like in the images below;

Not that using a spacer is bad in turning off check engine light on cars or vehicles, but what criminal elements are using it for is what is bad.

In addition, the check engine light of the car its catalyst has been stolen could be covered with black tape via its dashboard instrument cluster. So, therefore, make sure the check engine light of the car is showing when you turn on the ignition.
