The fuel pump is the "heart" of the fuel system. In every operating state, sufficient fuel must be supplied to the engine. If this does not occur, there will be malfunctions in the operation and the engine can even stop running, Fuel pump operated on electric current is known as electric fuel pump. Instead of a vacuum in the mechanical pump, electric pumps could be either flow or positive displacement pumps. They are designed in such way that the pumping mechanism sits directly on the shaft of the electric motor and are flooded with fuel,which cools and "lubricates" them at the same time.
The four basic kinds of electric pumps are ;plunger, diaphragm, bellows and impeller(turbine). The first three types are driven by solenoids, but the turbine pump is driven by a small electric motor. Electrically actuated pumps are at an advantage over the engine driven mechanical pumps because their outputs are high under starting conditions, when a steady supply of fuel is desirable and during idling when a pulsating supply of fuel could cause unstable running.
